PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Glenn Tarver Some takeaways from our Annual General Meeting:
Our longtime and much-appreciated treasurer John Sproule has indicated he will serve one more year, so we will need a replacement as of April, 2025. John will provide training over the next 12 months. He assures us that being Don Heights Treasurer is not an onerous undertaking. Leaving our Board of Directors are Susan McAlister and Judy Newman who were both solid and valued contributors. We thank them, and welcome new directors Linda Schofield and Janis Daly. Our Sunday Services Committee led by Sharyn Devine requires just a few more members for helping to plan enjoyable and meaningful presentations 52 weeks a year. Congregation membership remains stable, however growth continues to be a high priority for the coming year. The DHGrow Committee will reconvene soon. Previous committee members are urged to return and newcomers will be welcomed. Our web site, which was updated and improved this past year, has been our primary source for newcomers who browsed and found us. Our investments portfolio (thank you, Ron Weigand) had a positive year-end and our condo units have appreciated in value, so we are financially secure. Rentals of our meeting space increased this past year. These provided revenues as well as opportunities for visitors to experience a taste of Unitarianism. Our congregation continues to have highly effective social action initiatives under Lorna Weigand's leadership. We provide considerable volunteer time and financial support for many worthy causes. We are fortunate to have an outstanding Office Administrator, Heather Vesh, who has willingly assumed roles that far exceed her job description. Our important fundraising concert featuring the spectacular concert piano virtuosity of Dr. Stanford Cheung is coming up on May 24. Please purchase tickets and help sell some as well. |

Choir member moves
After eight years with Don Heights Singers, Antonette Blanchard had to stop. But only because she moved to Hamilton in April to be close to her daughter and imminent grandchild. Antonette has promised to introduce our original songs to the new singing group she has joined there. And she'll be coming back for special occasions. We celebrated Lidia Labate's birthday with a decadent vanilla cake with chocolate icing, courtesy of choir member Dianne Ramsawak.
Climate action Lorna
Photo, above, there's our Lorna front and centre on climate action, urging people at to support the Citizens Climate Lobby and to talk to their politicians about the vital importance of clean air measures and making polluters pay. Lorna chairs the Don Heights Unitarian Social Action Committee working for social justice.

Recording project planned
Canadian literary figure Dr. George Elliott Clarke is leading a CD recording project called "Afro-Metis Anthem", to be produced by legendary musical artist Ken Whiteley. Don Heights donated meeting space for planning sessions that involved perennial folk favourite Chris White, Don Heights music director Sheila White, longtime musician/mentor Russ Kelley, Nova Scotian jazz singer Linda Carvery and others. The project is backed by some Toronto Arts Council funding. A campaign intends to raise the rest.
She teaches blind people to "see" in colour
Dr. Hsin-Yi Chao accompanied member John Kennedy, her one-time professor, to a Sunday service at Don Heights on April 13. The doctorate holder (Taiwan) has revolutionized the representation of colour for visually impaired people, as a sighted person building a bridge in the form of groundbreaking codes and a tactile book. Already in use in Taiwan, and with an exhibit of colour paintings done by blind people to illustrate the success of her invention, the researcher is hopeful other countries will adopt it.
